4th Grade students were put in groups of 3-4 with the objective to build the tallest free-standing tower using 20 pieces of spaghetti, a yard of string, a yard of tape, scissors, and a jumbo marshmallow. The marshmallow could not be altered and had to be at the top of the structure. They were challenged to not tape anything to their desks and given 30 minutes to plan their design and execute it.
Los estudiantes se pusieron en grupos de 3-4 con el objetivo de construir la torre independiente más alta usando 20 piezas de espagueti, una yarda de cuerda, una yarda de cinta adhesiva, tijeras y un malvavisco gigante. El malvavisco no se podía alterar y tenía que estar en la parte superior de la estructura. Se les desafió a no pegar nada en sus escritorios y se les dio 30 minutos para planificar su diseño y ejecutarlo.
They tried several different ways to meet the objective and faced many challenges along the way. We had one group to complete the challenge successfully in the time given, whose structure measured 18 inches tall!
We will try this STEAM project again at some point this year to see what the students do differently and if more of them will succeed in the task.
Nonetheless, the children enjoyed getting to put their minds together in problem-solving for this project and a yummy treat in the end. (:
Intentaron varias formas diferentes de cumplir el objetivo y enfrentaron muchos desafíos en el camino. Tuvimos un grupo para completar el desafío con éxito en el tiempo dado, ¡cuya estructura medía 18 pulgadas de alto!
Intentaremos este proyecto STEAM nuevamente en algún momento este año para ver qué hacen los estudiantes de manera diferente y si más de ellos tendrán éxito en la tarea.
No obstante, los niños disfrutaron de poner sus mentes juntas en la resolución de problemas para este proyecto y un delicioso regalo al final. (:
